California Trip Suggestions
These are suggestions for packing items to be taken along on your trip and other areas of concern. Although most of you travel around the state extensively, there are a few suggestions that we would like to make to prepare you for this trip.
Luggage
Medium to warm clothes. Although we are in California, it is still December and we are at sea level with humidity. The weatherman may say 50 – 65 degrees…but that is comparable to our 35 to 40 here in WY. It’s always easier to be warm and discard clothing than to be cold and wish you had planned better!
Our evening at Medieval Times will directly follow our stop at Knotts Berry Farm. You will need to dress comfortable, but not sloppy.
Shoes You will need your band shoes, comfortable walking/marching shoes and a spare pair in case of bad weather.
In case of bad weather: You may want to bring a small travel umbrella or a pocket poncho. The pocket ponchos are available in Wal Mart type stores usually in the sporting goods area. They can be purchased for around $1 and are well worth it! Keep one in your pocket when the weather looks threatening. (If it rains while you are at one of the activities….you may enjoy yourselves much more if you are warm and dry. (more than one may be advisable.)
Camera & Film We would strongly advise you to bring inexpensive cameras in case of loss or theft. We also would suggest to buy all of your film here at home. Film can be very expensive at a convenience store or park.
Travel Alarms Although the hotel does have alarm clocks in every room, it would be advisable to have one along that you know how to operate and are comfortable with. If you and your room mates all bring one and set them, we would guess that the chances of over sleeping may not be so great. (We may not have wake up calls from the hotel).
Personal Items Shampoo, soap, curling irons, personal items, etc. Although the rooms have shampoo, soap etc., you may prefer your own items as well as there probably will not be a sufficient amount supplied by the hotel for each room. Don’t forget the band aids for blisters. Between rehearsals and all the walking we will be doing…you may need them. Each room does have a hair dryer so you may not want to carry one along unless you feel you need more. There are also ironing boards and irons available at both hotels.
Watches Due to our tight schedules….Please….everyone wear a watch!
Swim Suits Definitely a must!…there is a swimming pool and hot tub at the hotel. There should be some time available to partake in the facilities..
Sun Protection Yes….if you are sun sensitive, we are at sea level and could run into some very warm weather. Sunglasses and hats are suggested too.
CD Players, I Pods, etc. Please be concerned with possible loss, damage or theft. Headphones should be worn at all times. Please be courteous to others around you, especially on the bus trip.
Instruments We suggest that piccolos, flutes and clarinets pack your instruments in your own luggage. These are the small instruments that usually get misplaced in transport. (Directors choice). All others should be easily identified with stickers and or name tags. You may want to check with your home insurance carrier and see if your instrument is covered under your homeowners policy. (If not, a rider can usually be attached if you wish.)
Money Although we can not tell you how much to bring, we will make suggestions at the end of this sheet to help you. You will have several occasions to stop along the way for quick food stops. Once you get to LA, breakfast is included every morning. Lunches are always on your own. You will need fast food meals on the way home. Including meals on route to and from CA, we estimate 1 breakfast meal, 7 lunches, 7 dinners, and snacks. Meals in the parks are expensive. All rooms have a refrigerator and microwave in them. This will help you save some $. We would suggest packing some snacks to bring along (but don’t bring coolers). Spending money is up to you….. Please remember, all admissions to all events are paid. Travelers checks are fine. Do not get anything larger than twenties….a lot of places will not accept large checks. (Make sure you have 2 forms of picture ID if you are using travelers checks.) We always suggest that you stash a $20 bill in case of emergency (or run out of $).
Security If you carry a wallet, you may want to keep it in your front pocket. Ladies carrying purses may want ones with short straps to keep them up and under their arms or long ones to wear across your body. Do not put all of your money in one place! We would suggest stashing a little here and there in case of loss or theft. Please feel free to allow your chaperone to bank some of your money for you. Team caps, Bandanas, team coats / caps, letter jackets are discouraged . You are marking yourself as a tourist and also many of these items may reflect gang apparel in certain areas of the city.
UNIFORMS Don’t forget them…..after all, that’s what we’re there for!
Carry on Bag We would prefer that everyone use a backpack sized one. Please plan on putting a change of clothes and some personal hygiene products in the bags with what ever else you pack. If the weather is bad and the busses have a lay over, clean cloths and personal hygiene products might be appreciated by your fellow travelers. We can never be too sure that there may be a delay somewhere along the trip.
The most important thing to remember when you pack is to plan out your clothes carefully. Each person is allowed only one suitcase and their carry on bag. You will not be able to change clothes several times in one day and also need to be able to separate your soiled clothes from your clean ones. (Remember, clean clothes and clean bodies….we’ll be traveling very closely for a week!) Many of you have not packed a suitcase for an entire week….just plan ahead. There are some laundry facilities at the hotel, but that’s not what we traveled to CA for…is it?
Communicate with your room mates and avoid taking duplicates if necessary. Do not pack your suitcases full on the trip to LA. Leave room so that you may bring some things home with you. You will not be allowed to carry large bags of souvenirs home with you on the busses….there’s only so much room on a bus!. Make a list of things you want to take and check it before you leave….then check it again. Don’t forget the uniform and your instrument!
Parent Contacts We would recommend that the students contact you, not the other way around. Although most everyone has a cell phone now days, there will be many occasions that it will be improper for the students to have them on.
In case of emergency, please feel free to call Dave Bellis (307) 431-1420 or Dawn Bellis
(307) 431-1422.

Dec. 28 Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch and dinner on your own at Universal Studios.
Dec. 29 Breakfast at the hotel. Meal coupon provided for lunch @ Disney. Dinner
on your own in the park.
Dec. 30 Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch provided at Band Fest. Dinner on your own
at Venice Beach.
Dec. 31 Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch on your own at Knotts Berry Farm. Dinner provided at Mideival Times.
Jan. 1 Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch provided after the parade and dinner provided at a local pizza buffet.
Jan. 2 Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch and dinner stops on your own as you travel
home.
All people eat differently. Some more……some less. In the past we have found that an average of $7.50 for breakfast, $10.00 for lunch and $15.00 for dinner is very sufficient. Meals at theme parks are expensive. Dinner meals may be at a nice sit down restaurant or fast food (less expensive.) Hopefully, all students will have a few good meals (other than fast food) while on the trip.
Spending money is entirely up to each individual. (Always keep in mind space limitations bringing items home.)
Allowing for the meals and prices we have laid out above our estimates are as follow:
1 breakfast @ $7.50 ea. $ 7.50
4 lunches @ $10.00 ea $ 40.00
6 dinners @ $15.00 ea $ 90.00
Total meal Estimate $137.5
